We are fortunate to live in a country where we have access to education from a young age. There are still many parts of the world where education isn't provided or available. Children in some of these countries desperately wish they could access this to make their lives more fulfilling and achieve their dreams.
The Challenge of Learning Disabilities
Education isn’t for everyone though. For some we know that they will face struggles and challenges when it comes to learning.
Researchers and educators are increasingly studying and discussing different learning disabilities and barriers to learning. Implementing additional help and support can hopefully overcome some of these barriers. Everyone has a preferred learning style, learns differently and at a different pace. Some people will admit that they just aren’t academic, they struggled at school, felt it wasn’t for them, but many of them will have gone on to have very successful careers in their chosen field.
Education Beyond Schooling
We often think of education as something that we do in a school from around the age of four. How long this continues is dependent on the individual; some will leave school at the age of 16 to take on an apprenticeship or similar role within a workplace. While others will choose to continue with further education such as A-Levels and even then, go on to university.
But, education doesn't stop there. Every day through life we are continually learning; we learn things at home, from family and friends. During our working life we learn the skills needed to do our chosen profession and then learn additional skills to gain a promotion or to enhance our career and take to the next level.
Continuous Professional Development in Dentistry
Working in the dental sector is no different and whichever career path you take within Dentistry. Once you have completed your initial training to gain your formal qualification you will be continually learning. With the introduction of registrations with the General Dental Council (GDC) for all qualified dental staff, one of the main requirements is that all staff are required to undertake continual profession development over a five-year cycle, known more commonly as CPD.
The opportunity to learn has never been easier than it is currently. With access to the internet, we can find a course, learn online from anywhere and often at a time to fit in around other commitments. We can order books to be delivered, to read online, we can listen to a podcast or an audiobook. This is as well as having access to more websites and resources that provide us with an opportunity to learn then we can even think about.
